Sports card rack packs for sale
Rack packs were vertically designed packaging for placement in toy shops, department stores and other locations where selling on ‘racks’ was typical. Popular from the early 1960s through the early 1990s, sports card rack packs are still around today at places like Kmart, Target and Walmart.
Sometimes rack packs can be a good buy, with the price per card a little less than a regular pack. They provide a nice ‘jump start’ on collecting a certain set without the commitment of a box, just in case you find you don’t really like a particular issue once you open a pack. The number of cards provides a nice representation of the overall product. A normal rack pack usually costs around $5 in a retail store.
For collectors looking for high grade older sports cards, mining rack packs has become a common—albeit expensive proposition. Rarely are cards in rack packs damaged just by the nature of the packaging. 1960s to mid-1970s rack packs typically sell for hundreds of dollars and more, depending on the year and series.
Usually consisting of three rows of about 12-17 cards per section, older unopened packs sold in this fashion were often sold in relatively clear packaging, making it easy to see at least six cards in the pack.
Rack packs, especially in the late 80s and early 90s, sometimes contained exclusive inserts.
